Fitness equipment

Shopify fitness equipment store development for big-ticket gear

We build the Shopify fitness equipment store that heavy gear needs: freight delivery that customers understand, monthly payment options, detailed specs and answers to the questions buyers ask before they spend real money on a rack or treadmill.

A considered purchase needs a store built for research

Selling equipment is closer to selling furniture than selling apparel. A squat rack, rower or treadmill is expensive, heavy and awkward to send back. Buyers research for days. They measure the garage, check ceiling height, look up weight capacity, wonder how a crate gets up the stairs and whether they can spread the cost. If the store cannot answer, they buy from one that can.

Operations are just as specific. Large items ship by freight or white-glove delivery rather than parcel, and live freight quotes need an app or carrier integration, so delivery pricing has to be planned early. Many brands also sell to gyms, studios, hotels and dealers, which brings quotes, trade pricing and company accounts into the same store as retail customers.

The closest fit in our own work is Salus Saunas, a maker of infrared and traditional saunas for homes and commercial spaces. We moved them from Magento to Shopify and built the store with custom JavaScript for the interactive parts of the experience. Heavy, high-value products with long research cycles share most of the needs of strength and cardio equipment, and that is the experience we bring to equipment brands.

  • Delivery options and freight pricing shown before checkout
  • Monthly payment estimates on product pages
  • Specs and comparison tables built from product data
  • Warranty, assembly and space requirements on every page
  • A path for gyms and dealers alongside retail buyers

Most of the sale happens before the cart, so that is where we put the effort.

Features for gym and fitness equipment stores

Built around how people research, compare, pay for and live with equipment.

  • Structured specs

Footprint, assembled height, product weight, user weight capacity, motor rating, resistance levels and power needs stored as metafields. The theme renders them as a clean, consistent spec table.

  • Comparison tables

Side-by-side comparison of models in a range, generated from the same spec data. When a spec changes, the product page and the comparison update together.

  • Will it fit?

Space and ceiling height guidance, minimum clearance, doorway notes and a simple footprint graphic. It answers the most common pre-sale question before anyone has to email it.

  • Financing on the product page

Shop Pay Installments, Affirm or Klarna messaging on product pages and in the cart where available in your markets, so the monthly figure does the talking.

  • Home gym bundles

A rack, bench, bar and plates sold together through Shopify Bundles or a bundle app, with inventory tracked per component so nothing oversells.

  • Attachment compatibility

Accessories linked to the frames and models they fit through metafields, so shoppers only see add-ons that work with what they own or are buying.

  • Video and 3D

Short videos of adjustment, folding and use, placed beside the specs they explain. Shopify product media also supports 3D models for viewing equipment from every angle.

  • Reviews from real setups

Photo reviews showing equipment in actual homes and garages, plus questions and answers for detailed pre-sale queries that specs do not cover.

  • Delivery estimates

Lead time per product and region on the product page, including made-to-order and backordered models, so delivery expectations are set before purchase.

  • Manuals and spare parts

Downloadable manuals and assembly guides per model, with a parts lookup so owners can reorder a cable, pad or bolt kit without calling support.

What makes a Shopify fitness equipment store different

Four areas we plan before design, because each one changes the product page, cart and checkout.

Freight and heavy-item delivery

Parcel rates work for bands, mats and kettlebells. They do not work for a 150 kg rack. Large items usually ship by LTL freight or a two-person delivery service, and the cost depends on weight, dimensions, distance and service level. Shopify does not quote LTL freight on its own, so most equipment stores use a freight shipping app or carrier-calculated rates through a carrier integration, which depends on your plan.

The harder questions are commercial. Do you absorb freight into the price, charge a flat rate per zone, or quote live? What happens when a cart mixes a treadmill with a parcel-sized accessory? Which postcodes or regions do you not serve? We answer these with your team first, then build shipping profiles, rules and delivery customizations (Shopify Functions can hide, rename or reorder delivery options) to match. The aim is a delivery estimate on the product page that matches what checkout charges.

Financing and payment

When a home gym costs as much as a used car, the monthly figure often decides the sale. Buy now, pay later providers such as Shop Pay Installments, Affirm and Klarna offer product page messaging that shows an estimated payment. Availability depends on your country, the provider and order value limits, so we check which options fit your markets before design.

Placement matters as much as the provider. The estimate should sit near the price, appear again in the cart and stay consistent at checkout. For commercial buyers the equivalent is invoicing with payment terms, which B2B on Shopify Plus supports for approved company accounts.

Selling to gyms, studios and dealers

Many equipment brands sell to two very different audiences. Home buyers want reassurance and financing. Gyms, studios, hotels and schools want quotes, volume pricing, delivery coordination and invoices. Shopify Plus handles both in one store with B2B features: company accounts with multiple buyers, catalogs and price lists per customer, quantity rules, payment terms and draft orders for quotes.

Brands on other plans can cover simpler trade needs with wholesale or quote apps. Dealers need something different again: a dealer locator, marketing assets and sometimes a separate ordering flow. We map these audiences in discovery so each gets a clear path without cluttering the retail experience.

Claims, safety and after-sales content

Fitness and recovery equipment invites health claims. We write and design product content around what the equipment does and how it is built, and leave claims about medical outcomes out. Rules on health claims and product safety information vary by region, so your team or advisers confirm the wording; we build the technical side, such as warranty displays, safety notes and age or usage guidance where needed.

After delivery, good content protects reviews. Assembly guides, maintenance schedules, warranty registration and a spare parts lookup turn support calls into self-service and keep owners coming back for accessories and upgrades.

  • Warranty terms per component such as frame, motor and parts
  • Assembly guides and tools-needed lists per model
  • Product registration after purchase
  • Spare parts and accessories by model

Our build process for equipment brands

Shipping and payments are planned before design, not patched in afterwards.

  1. 01Discovery

    Understand range, logistics and buyers

We look at product sizes and weights, carriers, delivery regions, retail and trade audiences and the questions your team answers most. Logistics often shapes the store more than design does.

  2. 02Shipping plan

    Plan delivery and payment rules

We decide how freight is quoted, which service levels to offer, how mixed carts behave and which financing providers fit your markets. Then we write it down as rules the build follows. Delivery service levels and return terms are agreed at the same time.

  3. 03Product data

    Model specs and compatibility

Spec metafields, comparison data, accessory compatibility and warranty terms are set up across the range. Spec sheets in PDFs or images become structured data.

  4. 04Design

    Design pages for research

Product, collection and comparison templates designed mobile first, with specs, fit guidance, financing and delivery visible early. Trade and support pages are designed alongside.

  5. 05Build

    Build the theme and integrations

A custom Online Store 2.0 theme connected to freight, financing, reviews, Klaviyo and your ERP, 3PL or warehouse system. B2B setup follows if you sell to gyms or dealers.

  6. 06Launch

    Test real orders and launch

We test freight quotes by region, mixed carts, financing, assembly add-ons and trade orders end to end. That includes a return request for a freight item, so the collection step is proven before a customer needs it. After launch we adjust from early orders and support tickets.

Mistakes that cost equipment sales

Common problems on fitness stores built on generic themes, and what we change.

  • Shipping cost revealed at checkout

A large freight charge appearing at the last step drives abandoned carts. We estimate delivery on the product page so checkout holds no surprises.

  • Specs as images

Spec sheets uploaded as pictures cannot be filtered, compared or read by search engines. We move specs into structured data the whole store can use.

  • Financing hidden until checkout

If the monthly price only appears at payment, the full price does all the talking on the product page. We show the estimate beside the price.

  • Missing dimensions

Leaving out assembled size, clearance or ceiling height turns a sale into an email thread, or a return after delivery. Every product carries them.

  • No commercial path

Gyms and studios need quotes, trade pricing and invoices. Without them they email, wait and often buy elsewhere. B2B or a quote flow keeps them on your store.

  • Accessories that do not fit

Suggesting attachments that are not compatible with the frame creates returns and frustration. Compatibility data fixes the recommendations.

  • Mixed carts that break shipping

A treadmill and a yoga mat in the same cart can produce a strange quote. We set rules for how freight and parcel items combine.

  • Nothing after delivery

Without manuals, registration and parts, support inboxes fill up. Post-purchase content protects reviews and brings owners back for upgrades.

  • Health claims nobody checked

Bold outcome claims on recovery and cardio products can create risk. We keep product copy factual and leave room for your compliance review.

  • Return terms nobody can find

Buyers hesitate when return freight and restocking terms are vague or hidden in a footer link. A short summary on the product page and the full terms one tap away settle the question.

Delivery, returns and range planning for a gym equipment ecommerce website

The operational decisions that decide whether a big-ticket order ends in a good review or a support ticket.

Match delivery service levels to the product

Not every heavy item needs the same delivery. Plates and a boxed bench may be fine left at the curb, while a treadmill bought for an upstairs room needs two people and a place to set it down. Most equipment brands end up offering two or three service levels, each with a plain description of where the item is left, whether packaging is taken away and whether assembly is included. Those descriptions have to match what your carrier or delivery partner actually does, so we write them with your operations team rather than borrowing generic wording.

In Shopify, service levels become delivery options at checkout, and assembly or room-of-choice delivery can also be sold as an add-on product when it is priced per item. Either way, the product page should say which levels are available for that item in the shopper’s region before it goes in the cart.

Prepare buyers for delivery day

Freight delivery asks more of the customer than a parcel does. They may need to book a time slot, be home on the day, clear a path and check the crate before signing. We build the post-purchase emails around those steps: what to expect, how scheduling works, how much room the packaging takes and what to look for on arrival. Your delivery partner’s process sets the details, and your team confirms how damage on arrival should be reported.

A short delivery guide linked from the order confirmation answers most of the questions that would otherwise reach your support inbox in the days before the truck arrives.

Be clear about returns on bulky items

Returning a rack or rower is expensive, and buyers know it. A policy that is vague about return freight, restocking fees or the condition an item must be in makes people hesitate, while a clear policy builds confidence even when its terms are firm. The terms are yours to set. We put a short summary on the product page, the full policy one tap away and the same wording in the cart, so nobody is surprised later.

Shopify lets you set return rules such as return windows and fees, and customers can request a return from their account. For freight items the request usually needs a manual step so your team can book a collection, and we set up the flow so those requests reach the right person with the order details attached.

Plan the range for peaks and backorders

Many equipment brands see demand jump around the new year and at the start of training seasons, and popular models can sell out for weeks. Rather than hiding sold-out products, brands often take preorders or back orders with a clear expected ship date. Shopify supports preorders through selling plans, which preorder apps use to take full payment or a deposit up front, and we show the expected date on the product page, in the cart and in order emails.

Range structure matters as much as stock. Plates sold in pairs or sets, racks in several heights and colors, and benches with optional attachments each need a clear variant model, so inventory, bundles and compatibility rules all read from the same data instead of drifting apart.

  • Plates and dumbbells as pairs or sets, with the weight of each piece stated
  • Rack height, color and hole spacing as variants or configurator options
  • Attachments linked by compatibility rather than listed loosely
  • Expected ship dates on backordered and made-to-order models

Common FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I run a fitness equipment store on Shopify?

Yes. A Shopify fitness equipment store works well once freight shipping, financing and spec data are set up properly. Shopify handles the catalog, checkout and integrations, while shipping apps, financing providers and metafields cover the category-specific needs.

  • How do I offer freight shipping for heavy equipment on Shopify?

Shopify does not quote LTL freight rates on its own, so most stores use a freight shipping app or carrier-calculated rates through a carrier integration. You can then offer service levels such as curbside or room of choice. Plan this before design, because it affects product pages and cart rules.

  • Can I show monthly payments on fitness equipment product pages?

Yes. Shop Pay Installments, Affirm, Klarna and similar providers offer product page messaging with an estimated monthly amount. Availability depends on your country, the provider and order value, so we check which options fit your markets.

  • How do I add a product comparison table to Shopify?

Store specs such as dimensions, weight capacity and motor rating as metafields, then build a comparison section that reads those fields across a range. Because it uses the same data as the product pages, the table stays accurate when specs change.

  • Can I sell assembly or installation services on Shopify?

Yes. Assembly can be sold as an optional add-on product or offered in the cart, priced by item or region. Clear notes on what self-assembly involves help buyers decide.

  • Can one Shopify store handle both home buyers and commercial gyms?

Yes. On Shopify Plus, B2B features support company accounts, price lists, quantity rules and payment terms in the same store as retail customers. On other plans, wholesale and quote apps can cover simpler needs.

  • Can I sell equipment bundles on Shopify?

Yes. Shopify Bundles and third-party bundle apps let you sell a rack, bench, bar and plates as one item while tracking inventory for each component. Bundles can carry their own price and images.

  • What integrations does a fitness equipment store usually need?

Most need a freight or shipping app, a financing provider, a review app, Klaviyo or similar for email, and a connection to an ERP, 3PL or warehouse system. Brands with dealers or commercial customers may add B2B tools or a dealer locator.

  • Can you migrate my equipment store from Magento or WooCommerce?

Yes. We have migrated Salus Saunas from Magento to Shopify. A migration moves products, customers, order history where possible and redirects, and it is a good moment to turn spec sheets into structured data.

  • How much does it cost to build a fitness equipment store?

Cost depends on range size, shipping complexity, B2B needs and integrations such as ERP or 3PL. We scope the work after discovery and give you a clear plan and estimate before the build starts.

  • How should I handle returns of heavy fitness equipment?

Set clear terms for return freight, restocking and item condition, then show a summary on the product page and in the cart. In Shopify you can set return rules and let customers request returns from their account, with a manual step so your team can book collection of freight items.

  • How long does it take to build a fitness equipment store?

It depends on scope and on how ready your specs, photography and shipping rules are. We set a timeline after discovery, once the shipping and payment plan is agreed.
