How agentic commerce works on Shopify
Platform details change quickly. This is how the main pieces fit together, based on Shopify’s own documentation. We confirm what is available to your store before we plan work.
Shopify Catalog: your products, structured for agents
Shopify Catalog structures product data, including titles, descriptions, images, pricing, inventory and shipping details, and shares it with connected AI platforms. Eligible products are included by default, and changes you make in the admin flow through without a separate feed.
Catalog needs no set-up for most merchants, but what comes out depends on what you put in. If your product data is thin or inconsistent, the Catalog will faithfully share thin or inconsistent data. Merchants whose data does not fit the defaults can use Catalog mapping to describe it properly.
The Universal Commerce Protocol: a common language for agents
The Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, is an open standard co-developed by Shopify and Google that covers cart, checkout, payment and post-purchase for agent-led shopping. Surfaces built on UCP apply your checkout rules, discounts and customizations, rather than bypassing them.
For most merchants, UCP is plumbing you never touch. For brands that want to build their own agent experiences, it is the foundation, along with Shopify’s MCP servers for catalog, cart, checkout and orders.
Agentic Storefronts: managing AI channels from the admin
Agentic Storefronts is a sales channel in the Shopify admin. For each AI channel you can turn product discovery on or off and, where offered, control direct checkout. Reporting shows orders, sales and conversions from the connected channels, and search intelligence shows which AI queries in your category you appear for and where you do not.
Shopify says it adds no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates. You remain the merchant of record and you keep the customer relationship.
Which channels and which shoppers
As of Shopify’s mid-2026 documentation, ChatGPT is live for merchants selling to US buyers, with the purchase completed on your store’s checkout. Microsoft Copilot can discover your products through Catalog, and eligible merchants can use Copilot Checkout. AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app are available to select US-based shops selling to US buyers, with native checkout and a wider rollout under way.
Purchasing through these channels is currently US-focused, and eligibility varies by channel and by store. We check what is open to you today and plan for what is coming, rather than assuming.
The Agentic plan: for brands not on Shopify
Shopify also offers an Agentic plan for businesses on other platforms. It lets them sell through Shopify’s AI channels without moving their online store, working alongside existing product, tax and order systems. Pricing is based on standard payment rates for sales through Shopify Checkout-powered channels rather than a monthly subscription.
If you run another platform and want to test AI channels, we can help you decide whether this route or a full move to Shopify makes more sense.
For brands building their own agents
Shopify’s developer tools let you build agents that search the Catalog, build carts, create checkouts and track orders. Agents identify themselves with a hosted profile, which determines their trust level and access, and Shopify provides a command line tool, MCP servers for catalog, cart, checkout and orders and order webhooks.
We build these integrations, whether the agent is a shopping assistant on your own site, a concierge inside another product or an internal tool for your sales team.
