How pet owners shop online

Shopify pet store development works best when it is planned around two very different trips. The first is routine: the same bag of food, litter or treats, bought again every few weeks. The second is discovery: a new toy, a better bed, a harness for a growing puppy. Many pet stores are built only for discovery and quietly lose the routine orders to marketplaces and autoship programs.

Owners also shop by animal before anything else. A cat owner does not want to wade through dog chews, and someone with a senior large-breed dog needs different food from a puppy owner. That makes pet type, life stage, size and dietary need the backbone of navigation and filtering.

We design and develop Shopify stores for pet food, treat, supplement, grooming and accessory brands that treat repeat purchase as the core of the business, with discovery layered on top.

  • Subscriptions that are easy to start and easy to manage
  • Navigation by pet type, life stage and size
  • Bundles and starter kits for new pet owners
  • Reminders timed to when food actually runs out

Get the reorder right and every new customer becomes worth far more over the life of their pet.

Pet store features we build

The building blocks we scope for most pet brands on Shopify. Your product mix decides which come first.

  • Subscribe and save

A clear one-time or subscribe choice on the product page, with the saving and delivery frequency shown up front. Frequencies are set to match pack sizes, not a default monthly cycle.

  • Subscriber self-service

A customer portal where owners skip a delivery, swap a flavor, change frequency or pause. Every one of those options is a reason not to cancel.

  • Pet profiles

Pet name, species, breed, size and birthday saved to the customer record with metafields. Recommendations, emails and birthday offers can then speak to the actual animal.

  • Shop by pet

Navigation and filters by species, life stage, breed size and dietary need, built on product metafields in Search & Discovery, so a cat owner only sees cat products.

  • Bundles and starter kits

New puppy and kitten kits, care routines and mix-and-match boxes. We use Shopify Bundles for fixed kits and a bundling app when shoppers build their own.

  • Replenishment reminders

Email and SMS flows in tools such as Klaviyo, timed to bag size and feeding amount, so the reminder lands before the bowl is empty rather than after.

  • Feeding calculators

Owners enter weight and activity level to see a daily portion, then a suggested bag size and subscription interval. It answers a real question and leads straight into a sensible order.

  • Ingredient transparency

Ingredients, guaranteed analysis and feeding guides published as real text, readable on a phone and searchable, never as a photo of the back of the bag.

  • Size guides by breed

Collars, harnesses, beds and coats sized by measurements and common breeds. Fewer wrong sizes means fewer returns and more confident first orders.

  • Reviews with pet photos

Review apps such as Judge.me collect photos of real pets using the product. Owners trust other owners, and the photos double as social content.

Our Shopify pet store development process

Planned around repeat purchase from the first workshop.

  1. 01Discovery

    Understand your products and customers

We look at which products are bought again, which bring in first orders and how your customers split by pet type. That shapes navigation and the subscription plan.

  2. 02Subscriptions

Choose and plan the subscription setup

We compare Shopify Subscriptions with apps such as Recharge, Appstle, Loop or Skio against your needs. Then we map discounts, frequencies and the customer portal.

  3. 03Catalog

    Structure pet and product data

Species, life stage, size, diet and ingredients become metafields, and flavors and pack sizes are grouped sensibly. This data powers filters, pet profiles and recommendations. We also decide which recipes stay as separate products and which become variants.

  4. 04Design

Design for repeat and discovery trips

Product pages, shop-by-pet navigation and the subscriber account are designed mobile first, where most reorders happen. You review a clickable prototype before code.

  5. 05Build

    Develop and connect your tools

We build the theme, filters, bundles and calculators, and connect email, reviews, shipping, fulfilment and any retail POS. Staging access lets you test along the way.

  6. 06Launch

    Test subscriptions end to end

We test sign-up, renewals, skips, swaps and failed payments before launch, then watch the first renewal cycle closely and fix anything that trips customers up. That includes out-of-stock renewals and payment retries, which rarely show up in a quick test.

Planning a pet supplies store that keeps customers

The thinking behind the features, for brands deciding where to invest first.

Start with the products people buy again

Food, litter, treats, dental chews, supplements and flea and tick care are routine purchases. Toys, beds, bowls, collars and travel gear are occasional ones. Before designing anything, we sort your catalog into those two groups, because they need different treatment. Routine products should make subscribing the obvious, easy choice, with the frequency matched to how long a pack actually lasts. Occasional products need strong photography, size guidance and reasons to add one more thing to the order.

This split also guides the homepage and navigation. A returning customer wants to reorder in a few taps; a first-time visitor wants to see the range for their animal. A good pet store serves both without making either feel like an afterthought.

Choose a subscription model before you design

Subscriptions touch the product page, the cart, the customer account, email flows and fulfilment. Adding them after launch usually means reworking several of those. We decide the model during discovery: simple subscribe and save on selected products, a curated box, a build-your-own box, or a prepaid plan. Then we choose the app that fits, from Shopify’s own Subscriptions app for straightforward recurring orders to dedicated apps that add swaps, bundles and retention offers.

The details matter as much as the app. How large is the discount, and is it on the first order only or every order? Can owners change flavor without cancelling? What happens when a card fails? These decisions are written down and tested before launch.

  • Subscribe and save
  • Curated or build-your-own boxes
  • Prepaid and gift subscriptions

Make shipping fair for heavy products

Large bags of food and litter are heavy, and shipping them at a flat rate can wipe out the margin. We set shipping rates and free shipping thresholds that reflect weight, and where you have a local customer base we can add Shopify’s built-in local delivery or pickup. For subscribers, shipping terms are shown clearly before they commit, so there are no surprises on the second order.

Earn trust on health and nutrition

Owners read labels carefully. Ingredients, guaranteed analysis, feeding guides and any health benefits should be presented as clear, searchable text. Claims about health, and rules around prescription diets or medications, vary by country, so you confirm what can be said and sold; we build the layout, and approval steps where a product needs one. Reviews with photos, vet or nutritionist input that you can stand behind, and plain returns terms all add to the confidence a first order needs.

Projects that show it

What we learned building for pet brands

Luna & Willow sells bowties, collars, harnesses, leashes and coordinated sets for dogs. Their previous store was hard to navigate and products were not fully organized, so we rebuilt it on Shopify with Sections Everywhere, restructured navigation into clear collections, and set up Shopify Search & Discovery, Judge.me reviews and shipping tools. Most of their traffic arrives on mobile, so the build was designed and tuned for phones first.

BODA makes small-batch products including pet accessories, totes and car mats. For them we reworked color, typography, imagery and the core page structure, and integrated Search & Discovery and Judge.me reviews. Both projects point to the same lesson: pet shoppers move quickly when products are grouped the way they think, and reviews from other owners carry real weight.

If your pet catalog has outgrown its current structure, we can show you how we would reorganize it.

Mistakes that cost pet stores repeat orders

Small decisions that make a big difference to retention.

  • Subscriptions added after launch

Choosing an app late often means reworking product pages and the account area. Planning it in from the start is cheaper and cleaner.

  • Rigid delivery frequencies

Offering only monthly when a large bag lasts six weeks leads to stockpiles and cancellations. Frequencies should match pack sizes.

  • Cancel as the only option

If owners cannot skip, pause or swap easily, many cancel instead. A good portal keeps them subscribed on their own terms.

  • Variant overload

Every size and flavor as a separate product clutters collections. Grouping them keeps the catalog easy to browse.

  • Shipping that ignores weight

Heavy food and litter cost more to ship. Thresholds and rates should reflect weight, and local delivery can help where you have reach.

  • Labels as images

Ingredient panels uploaded as photos cannot be searched or read easily on a phone. Real text serves owners and search engines.

  • One-size navigation

Mixing dog and cat products in the same lists frustrates both. Shop-by-pet should be the first choice a visitor makes.

  • Unclear rules on regulated items

Prescription diets or medications may need approvals that vary by country. You confirm what applies; we build the step.

  • No plan for failed payments

Expired and declined cards end subscriptions quietly when nobody sets up retries and reminder emails. A clear payment update path gives owners an easy way to stay subscribed.

  • Out-of-stock renewals

When a subscribed recipe runs out and the renewal simply fails, the customer often never hears why. Decide in advance whether to wait, swap or skip, and tell them which happened.

Merchandising, returns and retention for a Shopify pet supplies store

The operating decisions that keep a pet store easy to shop as the range and the subscriber base grow.

Group flavors and pack sizes the way owners compare them

A single food line can come in six recipes and four bag sizes, and listing every combination as its own product buries the range. We usually keep one product per recipe with pack size as the variant, so owners can compare sizes on one page and reviews collect in one place instead of being split across near-identical listings. Where recipes need their own pages for search, because owners look for a recipe such as salmon and rice by name, we link them as siblings with a selector, so moving between recipes feels like changing an option.

Price per unit helps with the choice between a small bag and a large one. Shopify can show unit prices where your market supports it, and where it does not, the theme can calculate the comparison from variant data. It answers the question owners are already doing in their heads.

Plan for life stages and transitions

Puppies become adults and adults become seniors, and each change usually means new food, different treats and sometimes a new bed or harness size. A pet profile with a birthday lets the store anticipate those moments. We set up collections for each life stage and email flows that suggest a gradual switch when a pet reaches the age your feeding guidance points to, with transition advice written or approved by your team. It is one of the few times an owner actively wants a recommendation, and a store that offers it at the right moment is well placed for the next order.

Write a returns policy that fits consumables

Returns in pet supplies split along the same line as the catalog. Opened food, treats and hygiene products usually cannot be resold, while an unworn harness in the wrong size can. Many brands handle food with a satisfaction promise, such as a refund or a different recipe if a pet will not eat it, rather than a physical return, and handle accessories with a standard exchange window. The policy is your decision. Our job is to make it visible on product pages and in the cart, and to set it up so owners can start an exchange without writing an email.

Shopify supports return rules and self-serve return requests in customer accounts, and size exchanges can run through Shopify or a returns app depending on how much automation you want. For subscribers, we also plan what happens when a delivery arrives damaged or late. A quick replacement path keeps the subscription going, while a slow email chain gives the owner a reason to try somewhere else.

Keep subscribers through the early renewals

Most of the effort in a subscription goes into the sign-up, but the first few renewals decide whether it lasts. The welcome email should confirm the frequency and next delivery date, explain how to skip or change it and set expectations on shipping. A reminder a few days before each renewal gives owners time to adjust rather than cancel after a charge they did not expect.

Failed payments need their own plan. Subscription apps retry cards on a schedule and send update-payment emails, and we make sure those emails match your brand and link straight to the right page. When a subscribed product goes out of stock, we agree in advance whether the renewal waits, swaps to a similar item or skips, and the customer is told which one happened.

  • Welcome flow that explains how to manage the subscription
  • Pre-renewal reminder with a skip link
  • Card retry schedule and payment update emails
  • Out-of-stock rules for subscribed products
  • Win-back emails for cancelled subscribers, if you choose to send them

Seasonal and gifting moments

Pet supplies are less seasonal than fashion, but there are clear moments: the holidays, a pet’s birthday or adoption anniversary, summer travel and flea and tick season in warmer months. Gift cards, gift subscriptions and gift-ready bundles let friends and family buy for someone else’s pet. We build landing pages for these moments from reusable sections, so your team can launch a campaign without a developer and take it down when the season ends.

Where pet product data lives in Shopify

How we usually model the details owners filter, compare and personalize by.

The right model depends on your catalog size and the apps you use. We confirm it during catalog planning, before any data is imported.

Pet businesses we build for

Different pet businesses lean on different parts of the store.

  • Food and treat brands

Recurring orders are the heart of the business, so the subscription flow, pack sizes and replenishment timing get the most attention. Ingredient and feeding information sits on every product.

  • Supplements and health

Shoppers want to know what a product does, how to dose it and whether it suits their animal. We structure dosage by weight and species, and you confirm any claims your market allows.

  • Grooming and care

Shampoos, brushes and dental care sell well as routines. Regimen bundles and how-to content help owners build a kit rather than buy a single item.

  • Accessories and fashion

Collars, leashes, harnesses and bowties are discovery purchases. Strong imagery, coordinated sets and breed size guides matter more than subscriptions here.

  • Multi-brand pet retailers

Large catalogs across many brands and species need strong search, brand pages and, for shops with physical locations, Shopify POS sharing stock with the website.

  • Subscription box brands

Monthly boxes need themed curation, size or allergy preferences per pet and gift subscriptions for people buying for someone else’s pet.

Common FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • What does Shopify pet store development include?

Shopify pet store development covers the theme, shop-by-pet navigation, product data, subscriptions, bundles, integrations and migration. We plan it around repeat purchase, with discovery features for toys and accessories layered on top.

  • How do I add subscribe and save to a Shopify pet store?

You add it with a subscription app that uses Shopify’s selling plans, such as Shopify Subscriptions or a dedicated app. We set up the discount, frequencies and product page selector, and make sure the theme and customer portal work well together.

  • Which subscription app is best for a pet food store?

It depends on what you need. Shopify Subscriptions covers simple recurring orders, while apps like Recharge, Appstle, Loop or Skio add features such as build-a-box, flavor swaps and retention tools. We compare them against your products and budget.

  • Can customers filter products by pet type on Shopify?

Yes. We store pet type, life stage, size and diet as product metafields and use them as filters through Search & Discovery. Owners can then narrow a collection to exactly what suits their pet.

  • Can Shopify store details about a customer’s pet?

Yes. Pet name, species, breed and birthday can be saved to the customer record with metafields. That data can then drive recommendations and birthday or life-stage emails in tools such as Klaviyo.

  • How do you handle shipping for heavy pet food?

We set weight-aware rates and free shipping thresholds, and can add Shopify local delivery or pickup where you serve nearby customers. The aim is shipping that is fair to shoppers and still profitable.

  • Can we sell online and in our pet shop with one system?

Yes. Shopify POS shares products, inventory and customer data with the online store, so a customer can buy in the shop and reorder online without starting again.

  • Can we move existing subscribers to a new subscription app?

Usually, yes. Most subscription apps support migrating active subscriptions, though payment details may need to move through your payment provider. We plan the migration so renewals continue without customers signing up again.

  • Do you build stores for pet accessory brands, not just food?

Yes. Our pet work includes accessory brands such as Luna & Willow, where collection structure, imagery, reviews and mobile performance mattered more than subscriptions.

  • Can you help with health claims on pet supplements?

We build the product layout and any approval steps, but we do not advise on what claims are allowed. Rules vary by country, so you confirm the wording with your regulatory advisor.

  • What return policy works for a Shopify pet store?

A policy that treats consumables and accessories differently usually works best. Opened food and hygiene items are rarely resellable, so many brands offer a refund or replacement promise instead of a return, while accessories get a normal exchange window. You set the terms; we make them clear on the store and set up returns or exchanges in Shopify.

  • How much does Shopify pet store development cost?

It depends on the catalog, subscription setup, custom features like calculators or pet profiles, integrations and any migration. We scope it after a discovery call and give you a clear plan first.
