Shopify wine and liquor store development for wineries, distilleries and bottle shops

We build Shopify stores for alcohol brands and retailers with age checks, delivery-zone rules, wine clubs and tasting-led browsing. You confirm your licensing and legal requirements; we build and test the store that applies them.

What makes alcohol ecommerce different

Shopify wine and liquor store development starts with a question most retail builds never face: who is allowed to buy this, and where can it go? Minimum age, permitted destinations, order volume limits, which carriers accept alcohol and what a label must show all vary by country, state and sometimes city. Those rules shape the store’s architecture, not just its footer.

We are not lawyers and we do not give legal advice. Before any build, you and your counsel or compliance provider confirm your licenses and the rules for each market you sell into. Our job is to turn those confirmed rules into working store logic: who sees what, which addresses can check out, what is captured at checkout and delivery, and how it is recorded on the order.

Beyond the rules, wine and spirits shoppers behave in recognizable ways. They browse by grape, region, vintage and style, respond to tasting notes and food pairings, buy gifts in seasonal waves and, once they love a producer, join a club. A good store makes each of those paths obvious.

  • Age confirmation on entry and a second check before the order
  • Checkout stopped for regions you cannot serve
  • Wine club and subscription flows members can manage
  • Filters by region, varietal, vintage and style

Rules and good merchandising are not in conflict. Planned together, they make a store that is safer to run and easier to buy from.

Selling alcohol on Shopify: what to settle before the build

A plain-language guide to the groundwork. This is general information about the technical side, not legal advice.

Who owns the rules

Shopify allows alcohol to be sold where it is legal, and responsibility for meeting the law sits with the merchant. In practice that means you, supported by your counsel or a compliance service, decide which licenses you hold, which markets you can serve and under what conditions. Requirements vary by region, and they change, so we never treat a previous project’s setup as a template for yours.

What we ask for at the start is a written list: minimum age per market, permitted ship-to destinations, any per-order or per-customer limits, label and warning information that must appear online, delivery requirements such as adult signatures, and any data you must keep. That list becomes the specification we build and test against, and you sign it off before development begins.

  • Licenses and permitted markets
  • Age and delivery requirements
  • Limits, labels and record keeping

Payments, carriers and apps come first

The most common launch delay we see on alcohol stores has nothing to do with design. It is a payment provider, carrier or app that turns out not to support alcohol in a particular market. Before any screens are drawn, we help you check whether your payment provider, including Shopify Payments, accepts your business where you sell, whether your carriers or 3PL ship alcohol to the destinations you need, and whether the age verification, club and tax apps you are considering support your setup.

Our payment gateway guide on the blog explains how Shopify handles providers in more detail. Settling this early keeps the rest of the project predictable.

Layers of age verification

Age checks usually work in layers rather than as a single popup. A confirmation screen on arrival sets the tone and filters casual visitors. A date-of-birth field or verification step before the order is placed records the claim against the order. Some markets or carriers also require an adult signature or ID check at the door, which needs to travel with the shipment to your fulfilment partner.

Which layers you need, and whether a simple confirmation is enough or a third-party identity check is required, is a question for your compliance advisor. We build whichever combination you choose, make sure it works on every entry point including product pages reached from search and ads, and keep the entry gate in a form that does not hide your catalog from search engines.

Merchandising that respects the rules

Once the controls are in place, the store can do what any good shop does: help people choose. Tasting notes, producer stories, pairing suggestions and vintage details give shoppers confidence, and structured data turns them into filters. Gifting, mixed cases and limited releases each need their own flows. Where certain markets are closed to you, a where-to-buy page or a notify-me option keeps those visitors from leaving empty-handed, within whatever limits your advisor sets.

Product data is the quiet foundation here. When every bottle carries the same fields for region, grape, vintage, style, volume and ABV, the store can build filters, comparison views and recommendation blocks automatically. When that information lives in free text, every new feature becomes manual work.

Clubs, allocations and limited releases

For many wineries and craft producers, the club is the most valuable part of the online business. Members expect more than a recurring charge: tiers with different bottle counts, curated shipments they can preview and sometimes customize, member-only pricing, early access to new releases and a simple way to skip a shipment when they travel. Shopify’s own Subscriptions app handles straightforward recurring orders, and dedicated club and subscription apps add tiers, curation and member pricing. We choose with you based on how your club actually runs, including how shipments are picked and when cards are charged.

Limited releases need their own planning. If a small allocation goes on sale to everyone at once, a handful of buyers can take it all. Member-only access windows, per-customer limits enforced at checkout and a product page that stays fast under a sudden rush make the release fair and keep your best customers happy. We test these flows with realistic order volumes on a staging store before the real date.

  • Club tiers and curated shipments
  • Member pricing and early access
  • Per-customer limits on releases

What to prepare for an alcohol store project

The inputs we ask for in the first weeks. Your advisors supply the rules; your team supplies the rest.

Rules from your advisors

  • Licenses held and markets you may serve
  • Minimum age per market
  • Permitted and blocked destinations
  • Order or customer limits
  • Label and warning text required online

Operations

  • Payment provider and backup options
  • Carriers or 3PL and their alcohol policies
  • Delivery requirements such as adult signature
  • Local delivery areas and pickup locations

Catalog and content

  • Product list with vintages and pack sizes
  • Tasting notes and pairing suggestions
  • Producer, vineyard or distillery stories
  • Bottle and lifestyle photography

Club and customers

  • Current club tiers and rules
  • Member list and active subscriptions
  • Email platform and customer segments
  • Trade or wholesale customers, if any

Age, delivery and catalog features we build

The technical side of selling alcohol online, configured to the rules you confirm with your advisors.

  • Age gate on arrival

A confirmation screen set to the minimum age for each market and remembered for the session. We build it as an overlay rather than a redirect, so product pages stay crawlable by search engines.

  • Date of birth before ordering

A second check where it counts. Depending on your plan, we capture date of birth in the cart or, on Shopify Plus, through a checkout UI extension, and save it against the order.

  • Third-party identity checks

Where your advisor requires stronger verification, we integrate an age or ID verification app and route orders that fail the check for review instead of fulfilment.

  • Delivery zone rules

Shipping profiles and Shopify Functions stop checkout for states, regions or postcodes you cannot ship to. The shopper sees a clear message instead of a cancelled order days later.

  • Adult signature at delivery

Orders are flagged for adult signature or ID checks and passed to your carrier or 3PL, so the requirement travels with the parcel and is not left to memory.

  • Quantity and volume limits

Cart and checkout validation that enforces per-order or per-product limits where your rules require them, applied the same way on every device.

  • Label information as data

ABV, volume, origin, allergens and warning text stored as metafields and shown in the same place on every product page, so nothing depends on someone remembering to type it.

  • Tasting-led filters

Region, varietal, vintage, style, sweetness and closure become filters in Search & Discovery. Shoppers can narrow a large list to a few bottles that suit them.

  • Local delivery and pickup

Shopify’s built-in local delivery and in-store pickup, limited to the postcodes or radius you serve, with delivery date selection where your operation supports it.

  • Restock and release alerts

Back-in-stock and new-vintage notifications through email or SMS tools such as Klaviyo, so a sold-out favorite brings customers back when it returns.

Mistakes we see on wine and liquor stores

Most are easy to avoid when they are planned for from the start.

  • Age gate on the homepage only

Shoppers often land on a product page from search or ads. The gate needs to work on every entry point, and the order-level check should not depend on it.

  • One shipping profile for everything

Wine, spirits and merchandise can follow different rules. A single profile either blocks sales you could make or allows ones you should not.

  • A club that is just a subscription

Members expect tiers, curated shipments, member pricing and the ability to skip or customize. A basic recurring product rarely covers that.

  • No plan for limited releases

Allocations and small-batch drops need member access, purchase limits and a page that holds up under a rush, or a few buyers take everything.

  • Tasting data stuck in paragraphs

When region, grape and style live only in description text, filters and comparisons cannot use them. Structured data makes the catalog browsable.

  • Providers checked at the end

Finding out late that a payment gateway or carrier will not support alcohol can delay launch by weeks. Check them first.

  • Gate that hides the catalog

A redirect-style gate can stop search engines from reading product pages. An overlay keeps content indexable while still asking the question.

  • Gifting as an afterthought

Gift messages, delivery dates and separate recipient addresses drive seasonal peaks. Bolting them on in November rarely goes well.

Our Shopify wine and liquor store development process

Rules first, then the shopping experience around them.

  1. 01Rules intake

    Collect your confirmed requirements

You share the age limits, permitted destinations, volume limits and label rules your counsel or compliance provider has confirmed. We turn them into a written spec you sign off.

  2. 02Providers

    Check payments, carriers and apps

We help you confirm that your payment provider, carriers and chosen apps support alcohol in each market. Anything that does not is replaced before design starts.

  3. 03Catalog

Structure the wine and spirits data

We set up metafields for region, varietal, vintage, style, ABV and tasting notes. These power filters, product pages, recommendations and label information.

  4. 04Design

Design shopping, gifting and club journeys

Collection pages, product pages, the club sign-up path and the member account are designed and reviewed on mobile and desktop. The age gate is designed as part of the brand, not a generic popup.

  5. 05Build

Develop the store and its controls

We build the theme, age checks, delivery rules, limits, club setup and integrations with fulfilment, POS and email tools. You test on a staging store as features land.

  6. 06Test and launch

    Test every rule before go-live

We place test orders from allowed and blocked destinations, under and over limits, and through each club flow, and record the results for you. Only then does the store go live.

Alcohol businesses we build for

Each business model needs a slightly different store.

  • Wineries selling direct

Cellar door and online sales in one place, with club membership, allocations for limited releases and vintage-level product pages.

  • Distilleries and spirits brands

Brand-led storytelling, limited editions, engraving or gift options, and where-to-buy pages for markets you cannot ship to directly.

  • Bottle shops and liquor retailers

Large multi-brand catalogs with strong filtering, local delivery and pickup, and inventory shared with in-store POS.

  • Craft breweries

Mixed cases, build-your-own packs, fast-selling releases and taproom merchandise alongside the beer.

  • Gifting and hampers

Gift messages, delivery date selection, corporate orders to many addresses and packaging add-ons.

  • Trade and wholesale

Restaurants and retailers ordering on account with their own pricing and payment terms, through B2B on Shopify Plus or a wholesale app.

  • No and low alcohol brands

Often fewer restrictions but the same tasting-led browsing, subscriptions and gifting. Your advisor confirms which rules still apply.

  • Multi-market sellers

Shopify Markets for currencies and languages, with per-market rules for age, destinations and product availability.

How we work with alcohol brands

The commitments we make on every wine, spirits and beer project.

  • Your rules, in writing

We never assume what applies in your market. Every control we build traces back to a requirement you and your advisors confirmed and signed off.

  • Tested, with evidence

Each rule gets test orders that should pass and orders that should fail. You receive the results, so you know what the store does before customers find out.

  • Providers checked early

Payment, carrier and app support for alcohol is confirmed in the first stage, which keeps surprises out of the final weeks.

  • Brand-led design

Age gates, club pages and product pages are designed to feel like your label and your cellar door, not like a generic template.

  • Clear plain-English handover

Your team learns how the age checks, delivery rules and limits are configured, and how to update them when a rule changes.

  • Help when rules change

Through our support and maintenance service, we update destinations, limits and label fields when your advisors tell you something has changed.

Common FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • Can you sell alcohol on Shopify?

Yes, Shopify allows alcohol sales where they are legal, but the merchant is responsible for holding the right licenses and following local rules. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so confirm yours with counsel or a compliance provider before launch.

  • What does Shopify wine and liquor store development include?

Shopify wine and liquor store development covers the theme, catalog structure, age checks, delivery-zone rules, limits, club or subscription setup, integrations and migration. The rules themselves come from you and your advisors; we build and test the store logic that applies them.

  • How does age verification work on a Shopify liquor store?

Most stores use layers: an age confirmation when a visitor first arrives and a date-of-birth or verification step before the order is placed. Some markets or carriers also require an adult signature or ID check at delivery, which we flag on the order.

  • Can Shopify block shipping to places we cannot deliver alcohol?

Yes. Shipping profiles control where products can ship, and Shopify Functions can stop checkout for specific regions or postcodes with a clear message. We configure this from the list of permitted destinations you provide.

  • Can we run a wine club on Shopify?

Yes. Shopify’s free Subscriptions app covers simple recurring orders, and dedicated club or subscription apps add tiers, curated shipments and member pricing. We help you choose based on how your club works.

  • Do you handle our licensing or legal compliance?

No. We do not give legal advice or obtain licenses. You confirm the requirements for each market, and we build and test the technical controls that apply them in your store.

  • Does Shopify Payments work for alcohol stores?

It depends on your country and business. Payment providers, including Shopify Payments, have their own policies for alcohol, so we check yours at the start of the project and plan an alternative provider if needed.

  • Can a bottle shop offer local delivery and pickup?

Yes. Shopify has built-in local delivery and in-store pickup, which we can limit to the areas you serve. With Shopify POS, in-store and online stock stay in one place.

  • Can we sell wine and merchandise in the same store?

Yes. We use separate shipping profiles and product rules so glasses, apparel or gift sets can ship more widely while alcohol follows its own destination rules. Mixed carts are checked before payment.

  • Can you migrate our winery or liquor store to Shopify?

Yes. We move products, customers and order history, recreate your rules on Shopify and set up redirects so search rankings carry over. Club members and subscriptions need their own migration plan, which we agree with you first.

  • How much does Shopify wine and liquor store development cost?

Cost depends on the number of markets and rules, club requirements, catalog size, integrations and any migration. We scope it after a discovery call and give you a clear plan before work starts.
