Planning a beauty or wellness store on Shopify
The decisions that decide how well the store sells, and how easy it is to run.
Model shades, sizes and concerns first
Beauty catalogs look simple and rarely are. A foundation may come in many shades and two sizes, a serum in a full size and a travel size, a hair extension in several lengths, colors and textures. Before designing, we decide which options are true variants, which belong to separate products, and which details are metafields such as skin type, concern, finish, coverage or hair texture.
This model decides almost everything that follows. Search & Discovery filters are built from it, quizzes recommend from it, routine sections draw on it, and reviews can be filtered by it. If it is inconsistent, every one of those features works badly. Time spent here is the best investment in the project.
- Variants for shade and size
- Metafields for skin type, concern, finish and texture
- Metaobjects for ingredients and routine steps
Ingredients and education as structured content
Shoppers in this category read labels. We store full ingredient lists, key actives, directions, warnings and allergen notes in metafields so they appear in the same place on every product page. For ingredients that appear across many products, metaobjects let you write a single explanation and link it everywhere, which also makes it easier to update wording when a formula or regulation changes.
Education then connects to products in both directions. A guide to retinol links to the products that contain it, and the product page links back to the guide. That turns the journal from a separate blog into part of the buying journey.
Subscriptions that customers keep
Subscriptions work when the interval matches reality. A cleanser that lasts six weeks should not default to a monthly delivery, or customers will cancel when the bathroom shelf fills up. We set intervals per product with your team, make skip, swap and pause easy in the customer portal, and send a reminder before each order ships.
Tool choice depends on complexity. Shopify Subscriptions covers straightforward subscribe-and-save. Apps like Recharge, Skio or Loop add build-a-box, flexible bundles and richer retention flows. We recommend the simplest option that meets your plans for the next year, not the one with the longest feature list.
Claims, labeling and regional rules
Cosmetics, supplements and wellness products are regulated, and the rules on what you can say, what must appear on a label and what you can ship differ by country and region. We are not legal or regulatory advisors and we do not write health or medical claims. Your team or your advisors approve product wording and decide what is allowed in each market.
What we do is make that approved wording manageable. Ingredient lists, warnings, directions and batch or allergen notes live in structured fields that display consistently. Shopify Markets controls which products and content appear in which country. And because the content is structured, a wording change can be made across the catalog without editing every product by hand.
Speed with rich media
Beauty stores are visual, and that visual weight adds up: texture videos, shade galleries, before-and-after sliders, review photos and user content. Each piece is reasonable alone; together they can make product pages slow, especially on phones.
We set image sizes and formats per template, load video only when it is about to be seen, and keep the first product image fast. We also review apps regularly, because review widgets, quizzes, loyalty popups and chat each add scripts. If a feature can be built natively in the theme with less weight, we usually recommend doing so.
