Overview
Māatram is more than a fashion label; it is a movement that celebrates India’s timeless artistry while reimagining it for the modern world. Rooted in heritage and crafted for today, Māatram brings together sarees, jewellery, and lifestyle products that carry the soul of India into the lives of contemporary women. The brand’s philosophy is captured in its very name: Māatram means change and evolution, a reminder that while traditions remain eternal, they must also flow into new forms. Through collaborations with artisans from across India, masters of temple jewellery, handwoven textiles, and heritage crafts, Māatram blends centuries-old craftsmanship with a modern design sensibility to create collections that are authentic, distinctive, and deeply personal. The Māatram woman is rooted yet forward-looking. She wears her heritage not as a weight of the past, but as a crown of identity.
Māatram’s existing website felt cluttered and visually outdated, failing to connect with the modern, design-conscious customer the brand was built to serve. The layout lacked the fluidity and refinement needed to reflect the brand’s elevated positioning, and the overall UX did not support effortless product discovery across a broad and growing saree catalog. Beyond the visual shortcomings, the store lacked a structured customisation experience; customers had no streamlined way to personalise their saree orders with add-ons such as stitched blouses, petticoats, fall & pico finishing, or pre-draped services. The store needed a complete redesign and rebuild that could marry Māatram’s heritage identity with a modern, conversion-focused digital experience.

The Challenge
The primary challenge was transforming a cluttered, visually dated storefront into a clean, modern, and emotionally resonant shopping experience, one that honoured Māatram’s heritage identity while meeting the expectations of a contemporary urban audience. The redesign demanded a careful balance: stripping away visual noise without losing the warmth and richness intrinsic to Indian craft and textile brands.
A technically significant challenge was the development of a custom Saree Customisation feature; an interactive, pre-cart add-on system that allowed customers to personalise each saree order with Fall & Pico edge finishing, a stitched blouse in their chosen style and size, a colour-matched petticoat, or a full pre-draped saree service with palla style selection. This feature had to be intuitive and visually minimal, functioning seamlessly across devices without overwhelming the customer. Equally critical was ensuring that all selected add-ons were accurately reflected in the cart, with clear itemisation of each customisation alongside the base saree order, eliminating ambiguity at checkout.
On the catalogue management side, the store required a restructured collection architecture, leveraging product tags and Shopify’s filtering logic to automatically surface the right sarees within category-specific and occasion-based collections, making discovery effortless across a wide and diverse product range.

The Solution
We rebuilt Māatram’s Shopify store from the ground up, fusing a bespoke UI design with the theme’s existing section architecture, reworking Liquid templates and custom CSS to reshape every section in alignment with the client’s vision. The result was a fluid, minimal storefront that let Māatram’s high-quality product imagery breathe, with clean typography, generous whitespace, and a warm yet modern visual language rooted in the brand’s identity.
The centrepiece of the build was the custom-coded Saree Customisation feature, developed entirely in Liquid and JavaScript. The feature presented customers with a structured set of optional add-ons: Fall & Pico, Stitched Blouse, Petticoat, and Pre-Draped Service; each with contextual sub-selections such as blouse style, size, and palla preference. The interface was engineered to be visually unobtrusive yet fully functional, with real-time customisation totals updating dynamically as customers made their selections. Custom cart logic was implemented to ensure every chosen add-on was accurately appended to the cart as a line item, giving customers complete clarity over their order before proceeding to checkout.
Shopify Search & Discovery was configured with tag-based filtering and smart collection logic, enabling automatic product categorisation across collections such as Everyday Luxe, Workwear, Puja Collection, and Evening Edit, as well as curated collections like Gulzaar, Naqsh, and Rangrez. Razorpay COD and Magic Checkout were integrated to streamline the payment experience for the Indian market, while Flow was configured to automate key backend operations. Judge.me was implemented to surface verified customer reviews and strengthen brand credibility.

The Results
The redesigned Māatram store delivered a digital experience that finally matched the brand’s ambition: elegant, intuitive, and deeply rooted in the identity it represents. By replacing a cluttered, outdated layout with a clean and purposeful UI, the store now speaks clearly to the modern Indian woman Māatram is built for.
The custom Saree Customisation feature transformed the purchasing journey, giving customers the confidence to personalise their orders with precision; reducing friction, minimising post-purchase confusion, and increasing average order value through seamlessly integrated add-ons. Restructured collections and tag-driven filtering significantly improved product discoverability, allowing customers to find occasion-appropriate sarees with ease across an expansive catalog. With Razorpay COD and Magic Checkout in place, the checkout experience was optimised for India’s diverse payment preferences - lowering drop-off and improving conversion. Māatram now stands on a scalable, performance-optimised Shopify foundation, ready to grow its catalog, expand its customer base, and carry Indian heritage into wardrobes across the world.
